Pickett V. Norian

On December 23, 2014, a Los Angeles jury returned an award of $16,486,072.32 for plaintiff Norbert Pickett. Mr. Pickett was the victim of a light impact rear end car accident in May of 2012. Since that date, he had a cervical fusion surgery that was redone, and a lumbar fusion surgery. Plaintiff waived past and future lost earnings, so this award was solely past and future medical bills, and pain and suffering ($15,000,000.00). Insurer was State Farm. Defendant’s new trial motion was denied, and with costs and prejudgment interest the judgment to date is in excess of $18,000,000.00.

April Boyd was rear-ended by a utility truck and after a few days, started to feel neck pain. After a few months of chiropractic treatment, her symptoms did not get better, and the truck’s insurance company said the impact was so light, because it was only a few hundred dollars, that no injury could have developed. So, she retained the Simon Law Group to fight for her! We got her into a world famous neurosurgeon who identified the problem in her neck, and performed fusion surgery, and her recovery was spectacular. The defendant fought everything, and on the eve of trial, after each side had retained eight experts, the case settled for 1M. The driving force in the case was the fact that April Boyd was an amazing and good person, and even though the defense followed her around for months, they could not “dig up” anything bad on her. She was a truly deserved person of this settlement.

Becerra v. 99 Cents Store

Margarita Beccera was shopping at the 99 Cents Store in East Los Angeles when she slipped on water leaking out of the Ice Machine, fracturing her knee cap. She ultimately needed a total knee replacement. The Store denied responsibility whatsoever. In trial, it was apparent that the Store “lost” the video of the incident (like they do in every case coincidentally), and also hid other evidence. The jury found unanimously in Mrs. Becerrra’s favor and awarded her a total verdict of 900K. The testimony from her loving husband and son painted a very compelling picture to the jury about how good a person Mrs. Becerra is, and how this gruesome injury affected her life and livelihood.

Kieran Doherty and Greg Jackson

Main Points: settlement, inital offer $250,000, sent in 998 to get the $850k settlement offer

Congratulations to Kieran Doherty and Greg Jackson for securing an $850,000 settlement for their client’s spine injury case with a heavily disputed causation due to minimal property damage. Initially, they mediated the case, with the highest offer at mediation being $225,000. The client wanted to try one last time to settle the case rather than proceed with trial, and with that in mind, they sent a 998 for $850,000 signaling to the defense that this was their one hance to settle the case. Just before the 998 expired, the defense attempted to settle $750,000, likely aiming for an $800,000 compromise. Nevertheless, Doherty and Jackson stood firm and defense accepted the 998 for $850,000 which the client was thrilled with.
